Kela Sako

A native of Hilo, Hawai’i, Kela’s sound is deeply influenced by the rich traditions of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B. Growing up in a family that moved frequently due to her father’s military career, she lived in various places, including Sacramento and Barstow, California. This nomadic upbringing enriched her unique sound. From a young age, Kela was immersed in music, participating in choirs and plays, and began writing poems and performing in middle school. Her influences include legends like Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Amy Winehouse, Sade, and Erykah Badu.

Kela’s music is a reflection of her inner world—each lyric and note a testament to the raw emotions and spirituality that shape her art. She believes in sharing personal stories through music, emphasizing that while each person’s story is unique, expressing it authentically can profoundly impact others. Her creative process is deeply personal; she draws inspiration from her own experiences, transforming pain into beauty. Kela views painful and difficult moments in life as raw and pure beauty, encouraging others to embrace suffering as a source of artistic inspiration.
