On Saturday, January 25, 2025, creators gathered at The Music Company for Pass The Aux, a music-sharing workshop hosted by artist and producer KayPressPlay and vocalist Daé Dream. The afternoon was a vibrant mix of collaboration, storytelling, and constructive feedback, bringing together local artists to share their works and grow as creators.
KayPressPlay kicked off the session with a track titled Afterparty, setting the tone for the evening with his collaborative storytelling approach. Speaking about his work with Daé Dream, Kay highlighted the importance of diving deep into a narrative, saying, “We try to put ourselves in the story and tell things from inside that place.” This insight laid a foundation of intentionality and vulnerability that resonated throughout the afternoon.
Participants were invited to sign up and share their music one by one, from first songs to tracks off upcoming albums. It wasn’t just about sharing finished pieces—several artists brought works in progress, offering a raw glimpse into their creative process. The supportive atmosphere encouraged everyone, from seasoned performers to first-time sharers, to open up and present their art.
Kay provided actionable advice, such as paying attention to drummers and other instrumentalists to inspire unique rhythms and dynamics. He noted that by observing the way other musicians create rhythm and establish timekeeping we can learn so much about how to do that effectively ourselves in real world scenarios. Kay’s feedback always emphasized that growth is a continuous journey, affirming his mantra: “Growth is the goal.”
Despite some initial nerves, the room’s welcoming energy put everyone at ease. Vulnerable pieces of art were met with open minds and hearts, reinforcing the idea that creativity thrives in community. After a participant shared their song, everyone would take turns providing constructive feedback and advice. One participant noted that even the act of speaking about their work felt like a victory—proof that growth often starts with the smallest of steps.
While the event had a hip-hop focus, the inclusivity of all genres ensured that everyone’s voice had a place. Together, the hosts cultivated an environment where attendees could exchange ideas, connect over shared experiences, and receive constructive criticism without fear of judgment.
The session ended with a sense of accomplishment and inspiration. For those who attended, it wasn’t just a workshop; it was a reminder that art is about sharing, networking, and growing together. TMC’s Pass The Aux workshops are a continuous testament to the power of music as a universal language, as well as a valuable space for growing as an artist and creative.
