When Hakim Ahmed moved from Minneapolis to San Diego about a year and a half ago, he was recording music using any means that he could. “I was recording in random basements, recording in my vehicle, recording in my home…even thinking of building my own studio.” But it was an ongoing challenge to find somewhere to record that could provide the audio quality that his music deserved, without becoming too expensive.
An online search led him to The Music Company (TMC). After looking through TMC’s Instagram, YouTube, and website, he realized that he’d found something unique. It wasn’t just the studio itself – it was TMC’s commitment to the local music community that stood out. “I found a space that welcomes diverse people and diverse music. It was kind of breathtaking.”
Music has always played an important role in Hakim’s life. “Music is therapy for me,” he said. “Coming in here and recording that one or two hours, it gives me a fresh breath of air… a second to kind of just forget where I’m at, what I’m dealing with, or what’s going on in my life.”
Hakim was far from a beginner. He had made money from his music before, but what he wanted now was a deeper understanding of the craft. “I want to understand more of the skeleton part of it,” he said. “The base, the foundation… mixing, mastering… really understanding the details.”
Affordability matters to Hakim. Compared to studios he had used elsewhere, the difference is huge. “Studio rates here are amazing,” he said. “TMC is more affordable than any studio I’ve ever been to… nationwide.”
Access to top-notch professional audio equipment matters too. “My first 30 or 40 songs were recorded on a Scarlett mic,” he said. “So just coming in and being able to choose from TMC’s pro-quality microphones… that’s a big step forward for me.”
Over time, his process has also become more consistent. “I feel like I’ve perfected my process here,” he said. “Being able to come in and knock out a track or two without spending too much time or money makes a big difference.”
Hakim remembers one session where it all came together for him. In less than an hour, he put vocals over a track he’d been working on for a while. “When I finished and listened back on the studio monitors, I was blown away. I was pacing back and forth, and I couldn’t believe it was me.” He sat in the parking lot for a good while, listening to the track on repeat, and drove home still playing it.
“The quality of music I’ve made at TMC beats anything I had done before,” he said. “When I take one of my new tracks and compare it to my old music…the sound quality difference… it’s amazing.”
Being in TMC’s studios also changed how he thought about the music itself. Watching other artists build songs from the ground up, layering instruments, vocals, and ideas – it expanded what he thought was possible. “My confidence grew by being here, but I also learned more about the art in the music.”
The Music Company gives Hakim what he had been searching for: affordable access to a professional environment where he can work consistently, deepen his craft, and hear his progress clearly. Without the financial pressure that so often limits independent artists, he is able to focus on the music – and create art that matches his vision.
