At The Music Company, our mission is simple yet powerful: to turn up the volume on San Diego music by making creative opportunities accessible, affordable, and rooted in community. Our recent Intro to DJing Workshop, hosted in partnership with the Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP), was a shining example of that mission in action

Opening the Studio Doors
On Saturday September 13, we welcomed 14 service members and veterans into our studios for a free hands-on workshop. With professional-grade Pioneer DJ equipment at their fingertips, attendees learned the fundamentals of live mixing, how DJs structure and transition between songs, and the key terminology that anchors DJ culture. They also got a taste of beatmatching, using effects, and working with digital interfaces—all while watching TMC instructor and audio engineer Nolan Conrad break down concepts step by step.

This wasn’t just about learning a new skill—it was about breaking down barriers to music education, giving participants the chance to step into an environment that might otherwise feel out of reach.

What Participants Had to Say
The response was overwhelmingly positive:

“The Intro to DJ’ing class was super cool! I learned a lot from it.”

“The instructor was excellent… Learning all the terminology was awesome and gives me the confidence to move forward with exploring this area of the creative arts further.”

“I suggest an intermediate-level DJ course as well as a follow up. It was a good showing and we learned a lot.”

Feedback like this reinforces why The Music Company exists—to equip people with skills, confidence, and inspiration to carry music into their own lives and communities.

Music as a Bridge
This workshop also marked a milestone: it was the first event we’ve held in partnership with ASAP. We’re excited to build on this success and do much more together in the future, both with ASAP and with the broader veterans community. Music is a powerful bridge, and collaborations like this expand the reach of our mission in meaningful ways.

Looking Ahead
The success of this workshop makes one thing clear: there’s a growing hunger for opportunities like this. We’re already exploring follow-up and intermediate-level DJing workshops, ensuring that people who take their first step with us have a path to continue learning and growing.

And beyond ASAP, we’re actively looking for more community-minded partners who share our vision. By working together, we can expand access to music, strengthen our local scene, and ensure that San Diego continues to be a place where creativity thrives.

Why it Matters
When we say “Turning Up the Volume on San Diego Music,” we mean making sure music doesn’t fade into the background of our city—it stays vibrant, inclusive, and accessible. Workshops like this aren’t just events; they’re part of building a sustainable, supportive ecosystem for music and creativity in San Diego.
